Nārada's inventory is the fullest catalogue of learning that Vedic letters know: the four Vedas, epic and purāṇa (the "fifth Veda" — the earliest testimony to their standing!), grammar, mathematics, mantics, the economics of treasure, the art of debate, politics, demonology, astrology — down to "the science of serpents". Eighteen disciplines; in the terms of any age, the whole encyclopaedia.
The Upaniṣad does not mock this list — it is honestly great; it only prepares its revaluation. Note too a gentle detail: adhyemi, "I study", in the present tense: Nārada has not "finished studying"; he is an eternal student, and his knowledge is alive and growing. All the weightier, then, is the next line: neither the bulk nor the freshness of learning settles its chief question.
