औपमन्यव कम् त्वम् आत्मानम् उपास्स इति दिवम् एव भगवो राजन् इति ह उवाच एषः वै सुतेजाः आत्मा वैश्वानरः यम् त्वम् आत्मानम् उपास्से तस्मात् तव सुतम् प्रसुतम् आसुतम् कुले दृश्यते

"Aupamanyava, whom do you venerate as the ātman?" — "Heaven, reverend king," he said. — "Resplendent is that Vaiśvānara-ātman whom you venerate. Hence in your family there is seen soma pressed, being pressed, and pressed again.

An examination in reverse begins: not the pupils questioning the teacher but the teacher the pupils, and every answer will be both accepted and corrected. The first, Aupamanyava, venerates heaven as the ātman. The king does not say "wrong": he gives the veneration a name — sutejas, "the Resplendent" — and shows its fruit: in the venerator's family soma is never lacking, an abundance of sacrificial inspiration.
Aśvapati's method is a jewel of Upaniṣadic pedagogy: every partial veneration is true in its fruits and false only as a whole. Each of the six venerates a real part of the real Vaiśvānara — which is why they all live prosperously; but a part taken for the whole is already poised above the venerator's head, as the next verse will show. So too every religion of the partial — of light, of power, of space — nourishes, until it pretends to be fullness.
