आदित् प्रत्नस्य रेतसः उत् वयम् तमसः परि ज्योतिः पश्यन्तः उत्तरम् स्वः पश्यन्तः उत्तरम् देवम् देवत्रा सूर्यम् अगन्म ज्योतिः उत्तमम् इति ज्योतिः उत्तमम् इति

"Rising from the primeval seed, — having seen the highest light beyond the darkness, having seen the highest light — we have come to Sūrya, the god among gods, to the supreme light, to the supreme light!"

The first of the promised ṛcs (Ṛg-veda 1.50.10 — the great hymn of coming out of darkness!): ād it pratnasya retasaḥ — "from the primeval seed" (from the ancient germ of being): ud vayaṁ tamasas pari jyotiṣ paśyanta uttaram — "we, having seen the higher light beyond the darkness" — devaṁ devatrā sūryam aganma — "have come to Sūrya, the god among gods" — jyotir uttamam — "to the supreme light" — twice over!
The ṛc bequeathed to a dying man is a song of rising out of darkness: the last hour is scored not as a lament but as a march of light: "through the dark — we have seen — we have come!" For one who holds Ghora's triad in his heart (Imperishable-Unshaken-Life-giving), death is this very verse: a passage from the seed of antiquity to the supreme Light (uttama-jyotis — that "highest radiance" in which Chāndogya 3.13 placed the inward light!). Men die as men rise.
