They said: "Just as we ourselves, sir, are well adorned, in our best clothes and neat, so are these two well adorned, in their best clothes and neat." — "That is the ātman," he said. "That is the immortal, the fearless, that is Brahman." And they went away with a heart at peace.

The pupils confirm the diagnosis: the reflections are dressed up like us — "this is the ātman". And Prajāpati repeats the sacred formula — "this is the immortal, the fearless, this is Brahman" — over… a reflection in a basin. The words are true (the ātman really is both the one who looks out of the eye and the one who shows himself in every image), but the hearers apply them to a surface; the teacher speaks the truth knowing it will be taken wrongly — and lets them go.
Śānta-hṛdayau — both went away "with a heart at peace". This is the most dangerous state on a spiritual path: the calm of a premature answer. The anxiety of not-yet-understanding is a grace; an early satisfaction is a trap. From here their destinies diverge on precisely this point: Virocana will remain content, Indra will begin to doubt. The ability to lose one's peace over the truth will prove to be what distinguishes a god from a demon.
