अथ याम् तृतीयाम् जुहुयात् ताम् जुहुयात् अपानाय स्वाहा इति अपानः तृप्यति

The third mouthful goes to the apāna, the descending breath (apa + √an), which governs elimination and rooting: it draws downward as a root draws a tree into the earth. Every prāṇa has its own service, and none is shameful: the oblation is offered also to that power which works in the lowest, least visible part of the bodily house.
There is a quiet dignity in this Vedic view: the whole man is hallowed, with no squeamish exclusions. The body is a temple not selectively; and those of its services which are not spoken of at table receive, at this table, their handful and their "svāhā".
