ते यथा तत्र न विवेकम् लभन्ते अमुष्य अहम् वृक्षस्य रसः अस्मि अमुष्य अहम् वृक्षस्य रसः अस्मि इति एवम् एव खलु सोम्य इमाः सर्वाः प्रजाः सति संपद्य न विदुः सति संपद्यामह इति

The heart of the parable is not the merging but the not-knowing: the saps "do not distinguish", and creatures on entering Being "do not know that they have entered". Every night, in deep sleep, every soul is a guest at the Source (6.8.1) — and returns having learned nothing. The trouble of saṁsāra is not separation from Being — there is no separation and can be none; the trouble is oblivion in the midst of complete nearness.
With this the Upaniṣad quietly reverses the task of the spiritual life: not to "reach" Being — we are always in him — but to know where you are; not a merging but an awakening within an embrace. Hence the path of bhakti is a path of remembrance — smaraṇa: to turn the nocturnal, unconscious "we do not know that we have entered" into a daytime, loving "I know with Whom I am". Honey that has come to know the Beekeeper — that, if you like, is the whole programme of devotion in one line of a parable.
