एतम् उ एव अहम् अभ्यगासिषम् तस्मात् मम त्वम् एकः असि इति ह कौषीतकिः पुत्रम् उवाच प्राणान् त्वम् भूमानम् अभिगायत बहवः वै मे भविष्यन्ति इति

"It was precisely him that I sang — therefore you are my only one," said Kauṣītaki to his son. "But you, sing the prāṇas in their multitude — [thinking:] 'may I have many.'"

A mirroring precept — now of the inward: "I sang the chief prāṇa as one, therefore you are one; but you, prāṇāṁs tvaṁ bhūmānam abhigāyata — sing the prāṇas as a multitude (bhūman — abundance!) — and you will have many."
The pair of instructions (the sun's rays, the currents of prāṇa) teaches one thing: both in the sky and in the body the one lives as many, and the contemplator is free to turn to either side — to Unity for the sake of union, to abundance for the sake of abundance. The Upaniṣad neither reproaches the father for his "only son" nor praises him: it dispassionately lays bare the mechanism: upāsanā is a rudder; whither the image is turned, thither the destiny sails. The weightier, then, are its later counsels as to which image to choose for the highest fruit.
