Here is how the ancients' knowledge worked in practice: they read any thing by the colour of its threads — "reddish" to heat, "white" to the waters, "black" to food. The qualification iva — "as it were, seemed" — is precious: the red is only as-it-were red, for the eye never sees pure threads, only the predominance of one in a knot. A knower holds in mind both the rule and its approximateness — the mark of a mature, unsuperstitious knowledge.
So the Upaniṣad describes the very art of seeing: for a knower the world is an open book in three colours, where every page is read without a dictionary. Not a magical gift but a training of the gaze, available to anyone who has taken the lesson of the threads.
