उद्गृह्णाति तत् निधनम् वर्षयति ह यः एतत् एवम् विद्वान् वृष्टौ पञ्चविधम् सामोपास्ते

अनुवाद
it lets up — that is the nidhana. And he who, knowing this thus, venerates the fivefold sāman in rain brings rain.

The close of the storm-service: udgṛhṇāti — "[the rain] lets up, draws itself in" — the nidhana, the cadence: the silence after a downpour is part of the song too: knowing how to end is also music.
And the fruit by likeness: varṣayati ha — "he brings rain" — the knower of rain's fivefoldness: a contemplator of the storm-liturgy becomes its officiant: the sky answers one who honours its song part by part. Behind this "rain-making" stands the general law of the series: a process deeply known opens itself to governance — not by violence done to it but by knowledge of its beats: so a helmsman "rules" a river by knowing its currents. To know a concord is to be its kin; and to kin, concord does not say no.
