अत्सि अन्नम् पश्यसि प्रियम् अत्त्य् अन्नम् पश्यति प्रियम् भवति अस्य ब्रह्मवर्चसम् कुले यः एतम् एवम् आत्मानम् वैश्वानरम् उपास्ते बस्तिः तु एषः आत्मनः इति ह उवाच बस्तिः ते व्यभेत्स्यत् यत् माम् न अगमिष्यः इति
atsi annam paśyasi priyam atty annam paśyati priyam bhavati asya brahmavarcasam kule yaḥ etam evam ātmānam vaiśvānaram upāste bastiḥ tu eṣaḥ ātmanaḥ iti ha uvāca bastiḥ te vyabhetsyat yat mām na agamiṣyaḥ iti
You eat food and see what is dear; he eats food and sees what is dear, and the lustre of Brahman is in the family of one who venerates this Vaiśvānara-ātman thus. But this is only the bladder of the ātman," he said. "Your bladder would have burst had you not come to me."

The waters correspond to the basti, the body's water-vessel: an unhonoured part, and therein lies the lesson's severity. Aśvapati does not pick flattering members for his devotees: the waters, for all their sanctity, are only the Body's moisture, and moisture belongs in a vessel. The Upaniṣad does not shrink from physiology where a superfluous halo must be knocked off an image.
And the threat is commensurate: it "would have burst" — an excess of unrecognised holiness tears the container. Behind the coarse image is an exact spiritual law: grace venerated without knowledge of the Whole accumulates like water with no spring and no outlet, and destroys the vessel. What saves is not less veneration but more knowledge — the inclusion of every gift within the Body of the Giver.
