अनुवाद
"If, my dear, one strikes this great tree at the root, it bleeds sap and lives; if one strikes it in the middle, it bleeds sap and lives; if one strikes it at the top, it bleeds sap and lives. Pervaded by the living soul, it stands drinking in moisture and rejoicing.

The third parable is probably growing right there, at the place of the conversation: a great tree. Strike it anywhere — at the root, in the middle, at the top — and sap will spurt everywhere: life is everywhere. The tree is "pervaded by the living soul" (jīvenātmanā anuprabhūtam — the same words with which Being entered the world, 6.3.2) and therefore stands "drinking in moisture and rejoicing" (modamānas) — the Upaniṣad is not shy of ascribing joy to a tree: where the jīva is, there is its sweetness.
The first lesson is of omnipresence: the soul does not sit in one point of a body like a lodger in a room; it is diffused through its bearer as life through a trunk — touch the living anywhere and it answers everywhere. The second lesson is being prepared: if life is what makes a tree a tree, what will remain when it departs? The next verse will show.
