अस्य यत् एकाम् शाखाम् जीवः जहाति अथ सा शुष्यति द्वितीयाम् जहाति अथ सा शुष्यति तृतीयाम् जहाति अथ सा शुष्यति सर्वम् जहाति सर्वः शुष्यति

The experiment from the other side: life leaves a branch and the branch withers; it leaves the whole tree and the whole withers. The greenness, the suppleness, the sap — everything we call "a tree" turns out to be the presence of the jīva; the timber by itself is a corpse, and the corpse begins exactly where the soul has ended.
Branch by branch — the father deliberately lingers, so that his son may see the law in detail: death does not come "in general"; it comes branch by branch, month by month, joint by joint — everywhere life answers, and only there. Out of this botany the chapter's most direct conclusion will now be drawn: who exactly dies, and who does not.
