तस्य ह वै एतस्य हृदयस्य पञ्च देवसुषयः सः यः अस्य प्राङ् सुषिः सः प्राणः तत् चक्षुः सः आदित्यः तत् एतत् तेजः अन्नाद्यम् इति उपासीत तेजस्वी अन्नादः भवति यः एवम् वेद

This heart has five divine gates. Its eastern gate is the prāṇa; that is sight, that is the sun. One should venerate it as "splendour and food". Resplendent and an eater of food becomes he who knows thus.

The heart as a fortress: pañca deva-suṣayaḥ — "five divine gates" (suṣi is an opening, a passage!): the sky of the heart, like a citadel, has five gates, and each is guarded by its own breath, sense and deity. The eastern: the prāṇa — sight — the sun: the gate of the morning light: it is venerated as tejas and annādyam — "splendour and food".
The five-gated heart is an inward map on which every direction is a threefold alliance (breath–sense–god): a man is built within like a maṇḍala with an east, south, west, north and zenith. The circuit of the gates, begun at the east, is the rite of the inner city: one who knows the guard of each gate receives its gifts (and the fruit matches the gate: from the solar one, splendour and food).
