ते ह यथैव इदम् बहिष्पवमानेन स्तोष्यमाणाः संरब्धाः सर्पन्ति इति एवम् आससृपुः ते ह समुपविश्य हिञ् चक्रुः

The dogs' morning service: te ha yathaivedaṁ bahiṣpavamānena stoṣyamāṇāḥ saṁrabdhāḥ sarpanti — "they crept as [the priests] before the bahiṣpavamāna, linked together": the bahiṣpavamāna is the morning laud of soma, which the singers perform moving in single file, each holding to the one ahead: the dogs reproduce it in formation! saṁrabdhāḥ — "linked": each holding the tail of the one in front: the procession is exact down to the gesture.
te ha samupaviśya hiṁ cakruḥ — "having sat down, they made the sound hiṁ": the hiṁ-kāra is the sacred striking-up of the sāman, the lowing primal sound before the singing! The satire has reached perfection: the canine college officiates faultlessly as to form. But the Upaniṣad is no longer laughing — the dogs are about to sing, and their hymn will turn out to be… the truth (the next verse): the form of a parody will be filled with the most exact theology of food.
