saḥ hovāca gārgyaḥ yaḥ eva asau āditye puruṣaḥ etam eva aham brahma upāsa iti saḥ hovāca ajātaśatruḥ mā ma etasmin saṃvadiṣṭhāḥ atiṣṭhāḥ sarveṣām bhūtānām mūrdhā rājā iti vai aham etam upāsa iti saḥ yaḥ etam evam upāste atiṣṭhāḥ sarveṣām bhūtānām mūrdhā rājā bhavati
Gārgya said: "The person who is in the sun — him I venerate as Brahman." Ajātaśatru said: "Do not speak to me of him! I venerate him as the Surpassing One, the head and king of all beings." He who venerates him thus becomes surpassing, the head and king of all beings.

Gārgya opens his stock: "the person in the sun — that is Brahman". And the king answers with a formula that will be repeated twelve times: mā maitasmin saṁvadiṣṭhāḥ, "do not speak to me of that!" — not because it is false, but because it is already known to him, and known better. Gārgya points out the object; the king knows its rank and its fruit: "the Surpassing One, the head, the king of all beings"; and he who venerates it so receives accordingly.
The pattern of the whole conversation is set: the scholar carries a set of pointers to Brahman, the king has the knowledge of what each pointer does and where it stops. This is the meeting of book-learning with experience: Gārgya was taught, Ajātaśatru has seen. Twelve times the brāhmaṇa will offer another "address" of the Absolute, and twelve times the king will show that an address is not the Master.
