This self is Brahman: made of consciousness, of mind, of breath, of eye, of hearing; of earth, of waters, of wind, of space; of light and of no-light, of desire and of no-desire, of anger and of no-anger, of dharma and of adharma — of everything. Of this it is said: "made of this, made of that". As one acts, as one behaves, so one becomes: the doer of good becomes good, the doer of evil becomes evil; one becomes meritorious by good work, bad by bad. And so they say: "a man here is made of desire": as his desire is, so is his resolve; as his resolve is, such work he does; whatever work he does, that he attains.

A summing verse that takes in the whole anthropology of the Vedas: ayam ātmā brahma — "this self is Brahman" (the third great utterance of the book!), and it is made "of everything" — of the pairs light and darkness, desire and dispassion, dharma and adharma: in it is the material of every possibility. And what the material will be cast into is decided by the chain minted here for ever: kāma → kratu → karma → phala: "as the desire, so the resolve; as the resolve, so the work; whatever work, that is attained".
Kāmamayo 'yaṁ puruṣaḥ — "a man is made of desire": not thought and not deed — desire is the prime matter of destiny; the deed only executes, the attainment only pays out. Therefore all self-work that has not reached the desires is cosmetics; and therefore bhakti works directly on a man's kāma-maya: not to suppress desire but to re-address it — to make that very force which forges destinies fall in love with Kṛṣṇa. Whichever way the desire turns, the whole chain travels: resolve, deed, the road after death.
