Three great names — Uddālaka, Nāka Maudgalya, Kumārahārita — are called as witnesses: the science of sacred marriage is no private opinion but the teaching of the men of the tradition. And their common verdict is merciless: "many brāhmaṇas by birth depart impotent and devoid of merit" — impoverished of both vīrya and puṇya: high birth does not save one who has squandered the essence of essences without knowledge.
The verse does not frighten — it diagnoses a squandering: the power meant for the continuation of the chain, spent unconsciously, carries merit away with it. The following verses give the remedy — down to a mantra of recovery: here too the Upaniṣad does not moralise but heals.
