译文
This is the fire Vaiśvānara, the one within a man: by it the food that is eaten is digested. Its roar is heard by one who stops his ears. When a man is about to depart [from the body], he no longer hears that roar.

The vidyā of the inner fire: Vaiśvānara, the all-human fire (the hero of the fifth book of the Chāndogya and of BG 15.14 — "becoming Vaiśvānara, I digest the food"), hums in everyone: stop your ears and you will hear a steady roar — that is your hearth of digestion burning, a sacrificial fire that does not go out from birth to death.
The simplest experiment — palms over the ears — is made a sacrament: anyone may hear his own Vaiśvānara. And here is the book's second sign of approaching death (after the pure solar orb, 5.5.2): before the departure the roar falls silent — the hearth is put out before the master leaves. The body is read through to the end as a temple with a perpetual fire: and that fire is audible.
