译文

as from a fire laid with damp fuel clouds of smoke go forth separately, so, my dear, from the breathing-out of this great Being came the Ṛg-veda, the Yajur-veda, the Sāma-veda, the Atharvāṅgirases, the histories, the purāṇas, the sciences, the upaniṣads, the verses, the sūtras, the expositions and the commentaries: all these are His breathings-out.

注释

The fourth image is smoke from a fire of damp wood: the clouds pour out of themselves, with no effort on the fire's part — so from "the great Being" (mahad bhūtam) all sacred knowledge was breathed out: the four Vedas, the epic, the purāṇas, the sciences, the upaniṣads, the sūtras, the commentaries. Niḥśvasitam — "an outbreath": the Veda is not composed, nor even "uttered" with effort — it is the breathing of God, as natural as the steam of breath on a cold morning.

This verse is the mainstay of the whole doctrine of apauruṣeya, the uncreatedness of the Veda, and at the same time the most intimate word said about it: scripture is not a granite tablet but the warm breath of the Living One; he who reads the Veda breathes air that came out of His breast. And note the breadth of the list: not the hymns only but histories and purāṇas, verses and commentaries; everything that honestly serves the truth is of the same breathing. The Bhāgavatam will claim the same right for itself: the ripened fruit of that same tree of the Vedas.
