He who wishes "may a son be born to me who is learned, renowned, a frequenter of assemblies, a speaker of speech that men wish to hear, who will learn all the Vedas and live out his full span" — let them, having cooked rice with meat and butter, eat it: they will be able to beget — with the meat of a young or a full-grown bull.

The summit of the ladder of sons: paṇḍitaḥ vigītaḥ samitiṁgamaḥ śuśrūṣitāṁ vācaṁ bhāṣitā — "learned, renowned, a goer to assemblies, a speaker of speech men long to hear", a knower of all the Vedas! It is the portrait of the ideal man of Vedic civilisation: an orator of assemblies whose word is welcome.
And the recipe for the summit is rice with meat: for the strongest wish, the strongest food (māṁsaudana), veal or beef. The verse is honest evidence of an age before the later prohibitions; the tradition that grew from these roots will change the composition of the meal while keeping the principle: the greatest of sons is asked for with the greatest offering available. The household's wishes are ranged in a ladder — and at its summit stands neither a strong man nor a rich one: a scholar with sweet speech.
