The king's answer is this book's first anatomy of sleep: as he falls asleep the conscious person "takes with his consciousness the consciousness of the breaths" — folds the light of all the faculties into himself — and rests "in the space within the heart". The dahara-ākāśa we know (ChU 8.1): the night homeland of consciousness is the heart; sleep is the sovereign's return to his inner chambers.
The fivefold "gathered in" (gṛhīta) — breath, speech, eye, ear, mind — describes sleep as a royal recall: the ruler withdraws his governors. That is why the sleeper did not hear the titles: hearing had been gathered in, no one was left at court; and that is why the touch got through: it was not a governor that was touched — it was a knock at the chambers themselves. Gārgya venerated twelve outward persons; the king shows the One in whom they gather for the night.
