"He is becoming one — he does not see," they say; "he is becoming one — he does not smell," they say; "he is becoming one — he does not taste… does not speak… does not hear… does not think… does not touch… does not know," they say. Then the tip of his heart grows bright, and by that light the self goes out — through the eye, or the crown of the head, or other places of the body. As he goes out, the breath goes out after him; after the breath, all the breaths. He becomes [pure] consciousness and follows consciousness; his knowledge and his works take him by the hand — and his former experience (pūrva-prajñā).

The common words about a dying man — "he is becoming one: he does not see, does not hear…" — the Upaniṣad confirms without amendment: the eight faculties fold into one (ekī-bhavati), like spokes to an axle. And then one of the most light-bearing phrases in the Veda about death: tasya haitasya hṛdayasyāgraṁ pradyotate — "the tip of his heart grows bright", and "by that light the self goes out": through the eye, the crown, or other gates (we remember the hundred and one channels and the one that goes upward: ChU 8.6.6).
Death is a departure by light: not a fall into darkness but an exit as a beam out of the heart. After him goes the breath, after the breath all the breaths: the royal train has set off. And the great formula of the baggage: taṁ vidyā-karmaṇī samanvārabhete pūrva-prajñā ca — "his knowledge and his works take him by the hand, and his former experience". Three companions across the threshold: what one learned, what one did, what one lived through. Neither gold nor titles — only vidyā, karma and prajñā; there is the only luggage worth caring about in life. The Gītā will repeat it: he carries his own store with him (saṁskāra; cf. BG 8.6).
