But those who conquer worlds by sacrifice, giving and austerity are born into the smoke; from the smoke into the night, from the night into the waning fortnight, from the waning fortnight into the six months of the sun's southward course, from the months into the world of the fathers, from the world of the fathers into the moon. Having reached the moon they become food: there the gods consume them, as [the drinkers consume] King Soma — "wax! wane!" And when that is spent, they come back into this space, from space into the wind, from the wind into rain, from rain into the earth; having reached the earth they become food; they are offered again in the fire of a man, then born in the fire of a woman. Rising up into the worlds again, they go round and round. But those who do not know these two paths become worms, birds and biting creatures.

The path of smoke, with the harshest formula in the Upaniṣads for the lunar lot: those who reach the moon "become food", and the gods consume them, saying āpyāyasva apakṣīyasva — "wax! wane!" — as they do to the moon itself. The heaven that has been earned is a table where the earner is the dish, growing and being eaten in time with the lunar phases. Nowhere is the religion of accumulation described more sharply.
Then comes the familiar descent: space, wind, rain, earth, food, the two fires — "and so they go round and round" (evam evānuparivartante). And the final boundary for those who know neither path: "worms, birds and biting creatures" — the third state (ChU 5.10.8) in a harsh recension. The king's five questions are answered to the end; the science of the two roads has been handed to Gautama — and through his line has reached those who hear it now. The choice of road the Upaniṣad, as always, leaves to the reader — having warned him about the menu of the lunar feast.
