The counting part of the examination begins — the "attainments" (sampad): how many of what there are in today's rite, and what is taken by them. The hotṛ's three ṛcs — introductory, sacrificial, laudatory — cover, by Yājñavalkya's word, "everything that breathes": the triad of recitations is commensurate with the whole living universe.
The method of the answers does not change: behind the number of the rite stands the number of the world. Nothing in the sacrifice is "just so": every count is a cipher of a cosmic measure, and he who knows the cipher wins not the points of a rite but the very things to which the count corresponds. Liturgics turns out to be the arithmetic of the universe.
