The narrator does not sit down of his own will, but only in the place assigned to him, and he does so "with humility" (vinayāt). This is no incidental detail: humility is the foundation for the right transmission of sacred knowledge. One who carries the word about the Lord and His devotees does not place himself above the listeners or seek honor, but takes the position of a servant. It is in such a state of mind that knowledge descends purely, undistorted by pride. Here it is especially emphasized that hearing and retelling narrations about the Supreme bear fruit only in a spirit of humility, in a mood of service rather than self-assertion.
