When I heard the words of Narada: 'These two—Krishna and Arjuna—are Nara and Narayana, and I always see them in Brahmaloka'—then, O Sanjaya, I lost hope of victory.

Narada plainly reveals the secret: Krishna and Arjuna are the eternal sages Nara and Narayana, whom he continually beholds in Brahmaloka. In other words, Krishna is the Supreme Lord Himself (Narayana), and Arjuna is His eternal companion (Nara). Hence the coming battle is not merely a human quarrel but the descent and pastime (lila) of the Lord Himself with His eternal devotee. Hearing this, Dhritarashtra understands: against Narayana Himself, his sons cannot stand.
