Having lost his sons, Dhritarashtra sees no further meaning in life and wishes to die. This is the bitter outcome of an existence built entirely on attachment to what is one's own: when its object vanishes, life seems empty. Here the difference between the two states of mind is laid bare: one for whom meaning lay only in perishable ties is left with nothing, while the devotee finds the meaning of life in service to the Lord, who never dies, and so no loss deprives him of support or purpose.
