On this matter, Krishna-Dvaipayana (Vyasa) proclaimed the holy hidden truth: from the sacred study of the Bharata — even for one who studies but a quarter of it, but with faith — all sins are purified completely.

The chapter closes with Vyasa's "upanishad" — a promise of fruit (phala-shruti): whoever studies the Mahabharata, even in part, but with faith, is purified of all sins without remainder. Why? Because the Mahabharata is hari-katha, a narrative of the Lord; hearing and studying it is shravana, the foundation of devotion, and this purifies the heart. Special note is given to the essential condition — faith (shraddha): without it there is no entry into spiritual life, for, as the Gita (9.3) says, those without faith do not attain the Lord. Thus already in its opening chapter the epic proclaims its essence: not merely a tale of war, but a purifying word about the Supreme, to be approached with faith and devotion.
