Here is given the traditional count of the gods, expanded from the sacred number “thirty-three.” Suta presents it “in brief” (saṃkṣepa). What matters most to remember is this: however numerous the gods may be, all of them are created beings (sṛṣṭi), countable and finite, having proceeded from a single primary cause. They are the mighty servants of the Supreme, not the Supreme Himself, who is uncountable and immeasurable. Thus even a listing of the celestials turns the mind back to Him from whom they all proceeded — to the Lord.
