Vyasa — hence his name, ‘the divider’ — split the single eternal Veda into parts and then created the Mahabharata. He did this by the power of austerity and celibacy (tapas, brahmacharya) — that is, by spiritual strength, not by intellect alone. Out of mercy toward the people of Kali-yuga, unable to grasp the Vedas directly, this incarnation of the Lord gave them an itihasa — an accessible presentation of the same truth. And it is called ‘sacred’ (punya): the mere hearing of it purifies the heart. Thus Vyasa's work is an act of the Lord's compassion toward the fallen souls of our age.
