Sanjaya gently but plainly points to the root of the whole tragedy: Dhritarashtra's excessive leniency toward his sons. A king must command both chastisement and grace (nigraha-anugraha) — punishing wrong and encouraging good; but blind indulgence of sons' whims, against dharma, is unacceptable. It was precisely this immoderate attachment, drowning out the voice of duty, that led to destruction. The lesson extends beyond royal duty: love not governed by dharma and the Lord's will turns to harm both the beloved and the one who loves. True care is to guide those close to us toward righteousness, not to indulge their vices.
