"When I heard that, having drawn the wondrous bow, Arjuna pierced the target, cast it down to the ground, and, before the eyes of all the kings, carried off Krishna (Draupadi) -- then, O Sanjaya, I lost hope for victory."

This verse opens the famous refrain: with each feat of the Pandavas, Dhritarashtra loses hope for his sons' victory. The blind king senses it: where the Pandavas, protected by Krishna, prevail, his sons, followers of adharma, cannot stand. This repeated "I lost hope" is an unwitting testimony to the inevitable triumph of dharma resting on Krishna (Gita 18.78). The very form of the refrain drives home a single truth: to oppose the Lord's devotees is hopeless.
