The Kaurava warriors, despairing of honest battle, fall upon the defenseless camp -- a foreshadowing of the night massacre carried out by Ashvatthama. Adharma, losing in open combat, resorts to treacherous night attacks on the unarmed. The more hopeless the cause of the impious, the darker their deeds become. Yet even this is permitted by the Lord only until the measure of their sin is full and inevitable retribution comes to pass.
