With this verse the narrative proper begins. Pandu, a mighty conqueror of many lands, leaves his kingdom and settles in the forest. Thus already at the outset a vital thought sounds: worldly victories and power are fleeting; even the greatest king abandons what he has won and departs. The turn in his fate prepares the ground for what follows. For the thoughtful listener this is a reminder: one should rely not on perishable achievements but on the eternal — on the Lord, the root of all dharma, of whom it has just been spoken.
