Thus ends Dhritarashtra's lament: on hearing the outcome of the war, he falls senseless — ‘enveloped in darkness’ by delusion (moha). This outer darkness is an image of his inner blindness: all his life, bound by attachment to his sons and never having found refuge in the Lord, he dwelt in the gloom of illusion, and now it engulfs him completely. He stands as the reverse example to Arjuna: Arjuna too fell into confusion on the battlefield, but turned to Krishna and found light; Dhritarashtra, never turning to the Lord, sinks into darkness. The lesson is clear: only the light of devotion dispels the gloom of moha; whoever clings to what is his own rather than to the Supreme remains in darkness.
