ह्रदं गत्वा स्तम्भयित्वा तद् अम्भः ।
दुर्योधनं विरथं भग्नदर्पं ।
तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय ॥

"When I heard that Duryodhana -- exhausted, alone, deprived of his chariot, his pride broken -- had reached the lake and, freezing its waters, hid [in it] lying down -- then, O Sanjaya, I lost hope of victory."

The one who once burned with envy at the Pandavas' prosperity and scorned his own father now hides in the waters of a lake -- alone, exhausted, chariotless, his pride broken. So the proud are humbled: excessive arrogance inevitably ends in disgrace. A heart consumed by envy, risen up against the Lord's devotees and against dharma itself, comes to utter ruin. In Duryodhana's fall is a visible verdict against pride and envy.
