To that grieving lord of the earth, who spoke and wailed thus, the wise son of Gavalgana (Sanjaya) spoke a word full of deep meaning.

Seeing the king sunk in inconsolable grief, wise Sanjaya addresses him with a word of ‘deep meaning’ (mahartha). Herein lies the duty and mercy of a wise friend: not to indulge sorrow, but to lift the suffering one with the light of knowledge. Lord Krishna did the same for the despondent Arjuna — He dispelled his confusion with instruction. True compassion offers not empty consolation but a truth able to heal the heart.
