When I heard that Ashvatthama, pursued by Bhimasena, enraged, unleashed the supreme weapon — the aishika — with which he struck down the embryo in the womb, then, O Sanjaya, I lost hope of victory.

In blind fury Ashvatthama turns his terrible weapon against the unborn child in Uttara's womb, seeking to cut off the very line of the Pandavas. Anger unrestrained by dharma comes to this monstrous extreme — an assault on defenseless life in the womb. Yet this embryo is the future Parikshit, who will hear the Shrimad-Bhagavatam and carry forward the line of devotees; the Lord will not let a lineage dear to Him perish. The villain's design will shatter against the will of the Supreme, who protects His own.
