The Mahabharata glorifies not only the Lord but also His devotees and saints — the devarshis, brahmarshis, rajarshis, and other righteous beings. Hearing of the lives and deeds of the Lord's devotees is itself purifying and inspiring: the company of saints (sadhu-sanga), even encountered through narration, awakens in the heart a longing for dharma and devotion. The epic is thus a treasury not only of hari-katha but also of bhakta-charitra — the life stories of those dear to the Lord.
