When the assembly led by Janamejaya asked Vyasa to speak, he did not tell the tale himself but entrusted it to his worthy disciple Vaishampayana. Here guru-parampara is shown plainly: the teacher authorizes the disciple to speak, and so the word that comes from the disciple's mouth carries the full force and authority of the teacher. Knowledge thus descends not from a chance narrator but along a consecrated chain of succession — and for that reason it can be trusted.
