Karna, having overpowered Bhima, does not kill him but only humiliates him with words and a poke of his bow — for he is bound by the vow he made to Kunti: to slay only Arjuna among the Pandavas. Thus even a mighty enemy is held by his given word, and the devotee Bhima is preserved from death. Behind what seems mere chance stands the design of the Lord, who guards His devotees: their lives are under His protection, and even the oaths of enemies serve to preserve them.
