अविक्षित् प्रबलो धूर्तः कृतबन्धुर् दृढेषुधिः ।
महापुराणः संभाव्यः प्रत्यङ्गः परहा श्रुतिः ॥
एते चान्ये च बहवः शतशो ऽथ सहस्रशः ।
श्रूयन्ते ऽयुतशश् चान्ये संख्याताश् चापि पद्मशः ॥

The roll of great kings closes by pointing to their sheer countlessness: not hundreds or thousands, but tens of thousands and myriads. The very immensity of this multitude of the departed is a vivid lesson: countless mighty rulers have passed through the world and vanished. Remembering so vast a company of the dead is meant to sober the grieving mind and turn it away from attachment to the transient, toward the one who stands beyond number and beyond time — the Lord.
