Vaishampayana recited the Bharata in the intervals between the rites of Janamejaya's sacrifice, and the listeners kept asking him, again and again, to continue. This reveals the true heart of sacrifice: even amid Vedic rituals, the highest thing is hearing (shravana) about the Lord. The tireless requests, ‘again and again,’ show the nature of hari-katha: narration about the Lord never satiates but only deepens the thirst to hear more. This is the mark of an awakening devotion.
