And at the end, having drawn near to himself, let him sing praise, contemplating the desire — attentively: soon will that desire be fulfilled for him with which he sings praise, that desire with which he sings praise.

The close of the practicum of refuges: ātmānam antata upasṛtya — "and at the end, having drawn near to himself": having gone round the seven outward refuges (melody, verse, seer, deity, metre, stoma, quarter), the singer returns to the eighth — to himself: the last refuge of a chant is the chanter, gathered and standing in presence.
kāmaṁ dhyāyann apramattaḥ — "contemplating the desire, undistracted": the sacrificer's wish is held in mind clearly and without wavering (apramatta — the perennial Upaniṣadic condition: the Kaṭha, the Muṇḍaka!); and the promise: abhyāśo ha yad asmai sa kāmaḥ samṛdhyeta — "soon will that desire be fulfilled for him". The double repetition of yat-kāmaḥ stuvīteti is the seal of the khaṇḍa's end. The upshot of the whole section: effective prayer = seven bows outward + collectedness within + a clear image of what is asked; a scattered chant is a sieve, a gathered one a vessel.
