Its eastern quarter is called Juhū, the southern Sahamānā, the western Rājñī, the northern Subhūtā. Their calf is the wind. He who thus knows this wind as the calf of the quarters does not weep the weeping for a son. "So do I know this wind as the calf of the quarters: may I not weep the weeping for a son!"

The chest's sides receive names and faces: Juhū — "the Sacrificial Ladle" (the east, the side of oblations!), Sahamānā — "the Enduring" (the south, the side of the fathers and of endurance), Rājñī — "the Queen" (the west, the kingdom of sunset), Subhūtā — "the Well-being" (the north, the side of good): at the world's four corners stand four living names. And the four quarters have a vatsa, a calf: vāyuḥ — the wind: the child of the quarters, running about among them!
And the fruit is among the most human in all the Veda: na putra-rodaṁ roditi — "he does not weep the weeping for a son": one who knows the wind as the calf of the quarters does not bury his children before himself! The connection runs deep: a son is the "calf" of a household; the wind is breath, life: he who honours the world's breathing as the child of the four quarters has his own child kept by all the quarters of space. The adjuration at the end — sa aham… mā putra-rodaṁ rudam — "may I not weep the weeping for a son" — is one of humanity's oldest parental prayers, set into a cosmology: the chest of the world is vast — but the Upaniṣad remembers what people actually pray for at its corners.
