Four oblations to the four powers, under their titles from the chapter's opening: to speech-the-wealth, the eye-the-support, hearing-the-attainment, the mind-the-abode. The rite re-establishes the peace concluded in the parable: the breath is sovereign, but the powers are its acknowledged ministers, and each is given its due honour. To honour the Whole is not to slight the parts.
And again every remainder runs into the common cup: the blessing of speech, sight, hearing and mind is gathered into one, to be drunk as one. So too in a man these powers are not rivals but a gift fused into a single life; the rite only makes visible the order the parable taught in words.
