"Put this salt into water and come to me in the morning." He did so. His father said: "Now bring me that salt which you put into the water yesterday evening." He felt for it with his hand and did not find it:

The fifth parable is salt in water, the most famous of them all. The task is set in the evening and answered in the morning: truth is again given time — a night of the work of dissolving. And again the Upaniṣad is true to its style: the great is taught with kitchen properties — a pinch of salt, a cup of water — for the subject of the lesson is not exotic; it is diffused through all the everyday, like the salt through this water.
"He felt for it with his hand and did not find it": a hand is cruder still than the eye that found "nothing" in the seed. The salt has ceased to be an object — a lump one can pick up — but it has not ceased to be. So the childish image of God as an object is removed: Being cannot be "fetched" and produced, and this is not his weakness but his manner of being present — dissolved, everywhere, as the tongue will now prove.
