The close of the adhyāya: the Ādityas and the All-gods make over the evening pressing — all three savanas of the day have been handed to the sacrificer by their heavenly owners: the question "where is the sacrificer's world?" (2.24.2) is answered three times over: his world is on every storey, at every door that knowledge has opened.
eṣa ha vai yajñasya mātrāṁ veda — "he indeed knows the measure of the sacrifice": mātrā — measure! — the very word by which the syllables were weighed (2.10) and the shares apportioned: to know the sacrifice is to know its measures: the hours, the fires, the hosts, the doors, the scope of the petitions. The doubled ya evaṁ veda is the seal of the second adhyāya: the science of the sāmans is complete: from concord-as-goodness, through the fifteen weavings, the timbres, the letters that are the bodies of gods, the three branches of dharma and the needle of Oṁ, to the three doors of the sacrificial day. The whole adhyāya is one instruction: the world is stitched through with song, and one who knows its measures receives everything from the world — made over to him, not stolen.
