"Comprehension is greater than contemplation. By comprehension a man knows the Ṛg-veda, the Yajur-veda, the Sāma-veda and all the sciences; heaven and earth, wind and space, the waters and heat, gods and men, all that lives down to worm and ant; dharma and adharma, truth and falsehood, good and evil, what is pleasing to the heart and what is not; food and taste, this world and that — all this he knows precisely by comprehension. Venerate comprehension."

The seventh rung: vijñāna — discerning comprehension, knowledge that has become understanding. The list of its dominions repeats the dominions of speech (7.2.1) with an addition: "food and taste, this world and that". Speech names everything; vijñāna understands everything: it tells dharma from adharma not by a dictionary but by substance.
This is the summit of the cognitive part of the ladder: above comprehension there will be no more cognitive powers — what follows are strength, food, the elements, that is, the bearers of the knower. All the more important to note that comprehension too is a rung and not a throne. The Gītā distinguishes likewise: behind jñāna stands the jñānī, behind knowledge the knower, and dearer to the Lord than all knowledge is the one who knows Him (BG 7.17–19).
