In the vital powers one should venerate the fivefold sāman that is higher-and-ever-higher: the prāṇa is the hiṅkāra, speech the prastāva, the eye the udgītha, hearing the pratihāra, the mind the nidhana. Higher and ever higher are these [members].

The sixth and crowning field is man himself, from within: prāṇeṣu — in the vital powers: breath is the striking-up (everything begins with an in-breath!), speech the setting-forth, the eye the lifting-up, hearing the taking-up, the mind the cadence (all that is received resolves in the mind). And the title of this sāman is parovarīyaḥ — "higher-and-ever-higher" (the very word from the close of the first adhyāya!): parovarīyāṁsi vā etāni — "these members rise each above the last": the inward song is a stairway in which every next beat stands higher than the one before.
The series has closed its circle: the worlds, rain, the waters, the year, the cattle — and now the singer himself: the same fivefoldness that sounds in a thunderstorm and in a year sounds in his breath, word, glance, hearing and thought: man is a sāman among sāmans, and the highest at that: in him the world's song becomes conscious of itself. It remains to receive the fruit — and it will be proportioned to the height.
